Njál's Task
A Lawspeaker Simulator • Viking Age Iceland
A Small Historical Game
This is a simple text-based browser game where you play as a Lawspeaker in medieval Iceland. You'll hear legal disputes and try to apply the correct historical laws to resolve them.
Please note: This game was made quickly for a game jam, so it's quite rough around the edges. I went with a text-based approach due to time constraints, and since I was learning HTML/CSS/JS game development as I went, you may encounter some technical quirks along the way!
What You'll Do
- Read 8 legal cases of increasing difficulty
- Enter your "Mental Palace" to select relevant laws
- Try to make good judgements to maintain your reputation
- See how your choices affect your standing as Lawspeaker
Historical Research
While the game itself is simple, I did try to make the legal content historically accurate using:
- Real Icelandic Grágás law codes
- Historical sources from Hurstwic and Regia Anglorum
- Saga-inspired case scenarios
Content Note
This depicts medieval legal practices including slavery, violence, and period gender roles - all presented in historical context.
Technical Notes
This is a web-based game that should work in most modern browsers. If you experience any issues, it's likely because I was figuring out web game development as I built it!
